Following loosely in the footsteps of the OPEN Unbeaten Path U.P., the 3T Exploro features Gravel Plus technology, allowing one frameset to handle (and handle well) 700x28c road tires on Saturday, cross tires on Sunday, and big 650bx2.1? mountain bike or gravel plus tires for after-work laps on the trail. Where the Exploro differs from the Unbeaten Path is its on-road manners, where the 3T really excels. In their words, the Exploro is a mountain bike for roadies. It carves corners, handles out-of-saddle sprints, and offers unmistakable aero profiles for saving those much-needed watts. For those who want a great road bike to do group rides, gran fondos, etc, but also want to break off onto dirt and gravel, the 3T is about as good as it gets. Similar to our Open U.P. 3T Exploro Team Gravel Bike Frameset

With aero frame construction becoming common and the gravel category a more legitimate category, it was only a matter of time that this mash-up of speed and dirt became a reality. Italian accessory company 3T went all in with both aerodynamics and dirt to create the Exploro Aero Team frame. The white Team version has a frame weight of 1150g and comes in 3T team white with red logos. 3T did some real testing in the wind tunnel. At speeds around 20 miles an hour there was a seven watt savings. On asphalt sections when you’re rolling at 30 miles per hour 3T claims it will save you 24 watts versus a round tube frame. If you’re lining up at the Belgian Waffle Ride, the Dirty Kanza 200, or that epic all-day gravel adventure, those watts saved are a bonus.

There are a lot of fancy builds out there for the U.P.P.E.R., but in our experience we’ve found that most riders are just looking for performance and reliability within a reasonable budget. We enjoy walking our customers through every step of the part-selection process, but for cyclists who would rather spend time planning their next ride instead of picking out components, we’ve put together a complete OPEN U.P.P.E.R. build that we would be proud to ride. Introducing our OPEN U.P.P.E.R. Ultegra Bike. Because the U.P.P.E.R. is such a versatile bike that can be ridden on any number of surfaces, we’ve hand selected parts that offer reliable, powerful performance on road, cross, gravel, bike packing, and more. A detailed parts spec is listed below, but for the important stuff, we include a full Shimano Ultegra mechanical or Di2 11 speed group with Shimano hydraulic brakes. Surly Straggler

To brake or to disc brake? The debate isn't getting any colder and Surly decided it's best to let you choose. Straggler is bred from Surly's revered rim-brake Cross-Check and comes out a lot the same, but also a little different. Frame geometry is pretty close, and you get all the attachment provisions for racks, fenders, and bottle cages that make these bikes something more utilitarian than a standard 'cross racer. Disc brakes are the obvious change though, and the Straggler sports Hayes CX Experts with 160mm rotors front and rear. The athletic character continues with a SRAM Apex 2x10 drivetrain, giving you a useful gear range for any type of riding you can dream up, and continues with 32-hole alloy Alex XD-E Lite rims wrapped in Surly's own super-versatile 700c x 41 Knard rubber. Surly Straggler

So what is this Straggler anyway? The easy answer is to say that Surly added disc brakes to a Cross-Check and this is close to accurate. People have asked them to make a disc version of their highly versatile Cross-Check for a long time now and almost everything about the two are very similar. Straggler is slightly different, though. The Straggler's geometry is slightly different, with angles and tube lengths very close but not identical to the Cross-Check, but like the Cross-Check it's ready to take you just about anywhere.
