Introducing SCOR: A Dedicated Swiss MTB Brand From BMC

Now Bikes is proud to be one of 25 select dealers nationwide to introduce SCOR bikes. It’s hard to believe that in a bike industry that’s saturated by brands and scarce in inventory that anyone would think now is a good time to introduce an entirely new bike brand. To find success requires a bike that is precise, refined, and yet unique, because there are no second chances in this market. That makes it all the more impressive to say that SCOR has done just that.

The Story

BMC has always been about performance in the traditional sense. Their bikes are light, stiff, and designed to perform under the most grueling circumstances to get you on the podium. It’s the kind of no frills attitude that you’d expect from a brand whose name is Bicycle Manufacturing Company. They do one thing and they do it with lethal precision and no compromises: build the highest performing bikes possible. But this philosophy leaves little room for play, which means if you’re a BMC bike engineer who values fun over fast you’re going to need to break the mold.

The first test mule where Mariano and Christof started tweaking geometry numbers on an old BMC mountain bike frame.

The second iteration transitions to the lower link driven suspension design, implemented to keep a low center of gravity.

The culmination of years of work and a passion for riding turned out to be quite the stunner.

SCOR is the literal materialization of this bike engineer’s dream. It’s an after-hours passion project that slowly built momentum until it finally received the backing and support that it needed from its parent company to become a fully realized bike. Mariano Shoefer and Christof Bigler, an engineer and industrial designer at BMC, respectively, weren’t satisfied with the current offerings at BMC, at least for their own riding purposes. Both riders loved pushing the limits of bikes and eking out every ounce of performance much in the way that BMC values, but for different purposes. They value play over podiums, spirit over speed, and good times over fast times. So the speed obsessed pursuits of BMC didn’t fall in line with the ride characteristics they wanted their new bike to exhibit. As the project approached completion, BMC realized this and decided to announce SCOR as a separate brand. SCOR is meant to embody the spirit of playful riding that Mariano and Christof live for.

The Bikes

SCOR’s first bike is the 4060. The name is a play on the bike’s versatility, since it can be set up with 140mm, or 160mm of travel. As such, the 4060 comes in two flavors: ST (Short Travel) and LT (Long Travel) both using the same frame. The ST is paired to a 150mm fork and uses a shorter shock length to reduce the rear wheel travel to 140mm. The LT is 170mm out front and 160mm in the rear. The ST suits our midwestern trails better than the LT, but if you’re looking for a burly yet playful bike to ride in other parts of the country then the LT may be right for you.

The 4060 ST GX has 150/140mm of travel and comes in a crisp mint color.

The 4060 LT GX has 170/160mm of travel and comes in a regal purple.

Travel numbers can tell a lot about a bike's intended purpose, but they’re not the whole story. A few other numbers really shed light on the 4060’s intentions. First is the 432mm chainstays, which are surprisingly short for a modern bike. This shortened chainstay helps the 4060 maneuver rapidly through corners and twisty, technical terrain. It also makes it easier to lean back and get the front wheel off the ground, something all playful riders love to do. A slack head angle (64.5/65.5 for the ST, 63.8/65 for the LT) is meant to inspire confidence on descents, while a long, but not too long reach finds a balance between stability and maneuverability.
