Nothing else offers the same combination of easy tubeless setup, stiffness, and jaw-dropping weight savings. They're utterly fat-tastic. In an effort to bring the advantages of Big Deal technology to an even wider audience, our engineers worked hard to apply the same principles to an aluminum platform. Enter: the Big Aluminum Deal and Big Half Aluminum Deal. At 80mm wide, these wheels offer superb fit with all common fat bike tire sizes. They have the same patented Inflatobam tubeless technology as their carbon brethren - saving over a pound in inner tubes alone. What's the difference between the B.A.D. and the B.H.A.D.? Only the rim diameter. The B.A.D. has a 24" or 26" diameter, while the B.H.A.D. is made for larger 27.5" fat bike tires. Build Options: The B.A.D. is available as a rim-only, or as a complete wheel using Hed Brickhouse hubs. Customers may also send in their own hubs for custom builds (see below for further info). Big Deal utilizes a ribbed, single-wall design to maximize stiffness and minimize rotational weight…all on a tubeless-ready platform. Compared to most aluminum fat bike wheel/tire combinations in the market today, you can expect to lose 1.5 to 2 pounds… per wheel. Note that the Big Deal is drilled symmetrically ONLY and cannot accommodate offset frames. Big Deal utilizes Inflatobam, Hed’s patented tubeless technology for installing big tires. The twin channel rim design provides a better pre-inflation seal by trapping each tire bead against the rim. This drastically reduces the amount of air it takes to get the beads to “bam” into place. In conjunction with the rim shape, Inflatobam utilizes Inflatobands. These effectively provide a variable rim-channel diameter. This compensates for the discrepancies in tire bead diameters by minimizing the gap between the tire and the rim channels (the main source of air leaks). Once seated, the angled bead shelf prevents the tire from collapsing back into the rim at low pressure. Our interior surfacing and tight tolerances ensure no tire burp or slip. If Big Deal is big, the BFD is gargantuan. Our more discerning customers just weren’t satisfied with an 85mm carbon rim. The bikes keep getting wider, the tires keep getting larger, and the Big Fat Deal is ready for the challenge. At a whopping 100mm wide, it can make the most of your fat bike footprint, for the ultimate in flotation over soft or powdery surfaces. At an incredibly light 500 grams per rim, the BFD is also much lighter than competitors’ skinnier aluminum rims. Combined with a tubeless tire setup, it is possible to lose up to two pounds per wheel when switching to Hed BFDs. Note that the BFD is drilled symmetrically ONLY and cannot accommodate offset frames. Like the Big Deal, the BFD utilizes Inflatobam, Hed’s patented tubeless technology for installing big tires. There's a lot of talk about the virtues of being fat. Fat bikes, fat wheels, fat tires... low pressures, more grip, more bacon, and more doughnuts. It's all about being bigger, badder, and fatter - right?! Yes and no. While we absolutely love getting awesomely fat with our Big Deal and B.F.D. wheels - sometimes we like to go on a diet. When you can’t even see a part, you might forget about it, but it doesn’t mean its not important. Flat tires are probably the most common bicycle failures. Many times, flats are caused by the rims, specifically the lack of protection from the rims' sharp edges. Good rim strips didn’t exist for BMX rims. They work well and improve the function of any 20 inch rim. If you forget about them, that means they are doing their job.

Sometimes, the oil port bolt comes loose and it's easy to lose, even if you've just taken it out to oil your hub. Surly Rim Strips have one job and they do it well. They cover the cutouts in your rim and — if you're running a tube — they protect it from spoke heads and other sharp matter (okay, so maybe they have TWO jobs but they do them both really well.) Rim strips are crucial and should be used with all Surly rims. Ours come in an array of colors so you can really "express yourself." Surly Rim strips are available in two different materials: PVC and Nylon. PVC is great if you plan on only running tubes. However, if there's any part of you that wants to try this tubeless thing you've been hearing about, Nylon strips are just the ticket. They're thinner and offer minimal stretch so they stay put and lay nicely inside the rim to provide a secure seal. Plus, they're lighter which we all know means you'll go faster… maybe.

The same spoke thread treatment used by Stan's pro wheel builders is now available to everyone. Stan's SRD Spoke Powder fills the threads of the spoke and functions as both a lubricant during assembly and a thread lock once built. Each bottle contains 24g (.8oz) which will treat approximately 300 wheels. The PTFE powder in Stan's SRD Spoke Powder acts as a barrier, keeping the metal of the nipple from bonding to the metal of the spoke and preventing spoke wind up during build or adjustment. In promoting a smoother turning nipple, the powder also ensures more accurate and consistent wheel builds, with less “ping and pop" during and after the build.
